Overview
The XJ40 is the second generation of the Jaguar XJ, unveiled on 8 October 1986 as the replacement for the Series III.
Designed under the leadership of George Thomson and Roger Zrimec, it introduced a more aerodynamic, squared-off design and featured Jaguar's new AJ6 straight-six engine - a four-valve, twin overhead cam design that replaced the classic XK engine in Jaguar's saloon range. Initially offered with 2.9-litre and 3.6-litre AJ6 engines, the range expanded in 1990 with a 4.0-litre (replacing the 3.6) and in 1991 with a 3.2-litre (replacing the 2.9).
