Overview

Jaguar S-Type X200 - Overview

The S-Type (project code X200) marked Jaguar's return to the mid-size executive sector, launched at the 1998 British International Motor Show and entering UK sales in 1999.

Built at Castle Bromwich, it was the first all-new saloon introduced after Ford's 1989 takeover. The engine range launched with Jaguar's AJ-V6 (3.0 litres) and AJ-V8 (4.0 litres). A 2002 revision brought a 2.5-litre V6 and replaced the 4.0 with a 4.2-litre V8; the supercharged 4.2 S-Type R followed. A 2004 facelift added a 2.7-litre diesel developed with PSA, and a final 2007 revision brought further updates before the XF replaced it in 2008.

Best & Worst Engines

Best Petrol Overall

AJ-V6 3.0L - 3.0 V6

The 3.0-litre AJ-V6 is the most common S-Type engine and the one to trust - smooth, reliable and well-supported. It's the engine that defined the X200's driving character.

Who it's for: buyers who want the classic S-Type experience without V8 complexity.

Highest Risk

AJD 2.7L V6 Diesel

The 2.7 diesel is a PSA-Ford joint venture engine - the same unit used in Land Rover and Peugeot/Citroën products. Known for injector, EGR and turbo issues; it's the most complex engine in the X200 range.

Who it's for: buyers who want diesel economy and are prepared for specialist maintenance.

Most Expensive Failure

AJ8FT Supercharged 4.2L - S-Type R

Supercharger rebuilds, cooling system failures and timing chain work on the 4.2 SC can run into thousands. This is the most expensive S-Type to maintain - but also the most rewarding.

Who it's for: enthusiasts who want 400bhp and are ready for the bills that come with it.

Best Value

AJ-V6 3.0L

The most common X200 engine by far, with cheap parts, nationwide specialist coverage, and a well-understood failure profile. A £2,500–£4,500 recon makes financial sense against a £1,500–£5,500 vehicle.

Who it's for: buyers who want the most cost-effective S-Type ownership.

Most Overlooked

AJ25 2.5L V6

The 2.5 V6 is rarer than the 3.0 but offers similar reliability with slightly better economy. It's often overlooked by buyers chasing the bigger engines - but it's a genuinely solid choice.

Who it's for: buyers who want the S-Type experience with lower running costs.

The X200 rule

A £2,500–£4,500 3.0 V6 recon against a £1,500–£5,500 S-Type sits at 45–300% of the car's value. On a sub-£2,500 high-mileage example, that brushes our 60% Jaguar threshold - we'll honestly tell you to walk away. Against a well-kept £4,000+ example, the same recon drops to a routine 63–100% - assess carefully. Value the car first.

Common Problems

4.0 V8 Timing Chain Tensioner Wear
2.7 Diesel Injector & EGR Failure
